Speaker Profile

Dr. Khaled Hamdy is a Project Management Expert, Author and Lecturer with more than 33 years international experience. Before joining the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai as the Projects Advisor, Dr. Hamdy provided Project and Engineering Management consultancy to organizations in Canada, Egypt, Oman and UAE covering diverse fields including Government, Construction, Manufacturing and Service Industries. Dr Hamdy serves as the Vice-Chair of the Jury of the Hamdan bin Mohammed Award for Innovation in Project Management since its inauguration in 2017. He is also a member of the organizing committee of the Dubai International Project Management Forum and chair of the forum’s Scientific Team.

Event Overview

Over the past two decades, there has been a great deal of literature published on innovation and innovation management. Converting a creative idea into reality requires projects and some form of project management. Unfortunately, innovation projects may not be able to be managed using the traditional project management philosophy we teach in our project management courses. Innovation varies from industry to industry and even companies within the same industry cannot come to an agreement on how innovation management should work.
It is inevitable that, over the next several years, professional organizations such as the Project Management Institute (PMI®) will recognize the need to begin setting some standards for innovation project management. This may appear as a certification program in innovation project management or a series of courses. It may also appear as an Innovation Project Management Manifesto like the Agile Manifesto. The greatest innovation in the next decade may be the recognition and advancement of innovation project management as a career. The intent of this paper is to identify several of the differences between traditional and innovation project management along with the accompanying challenges, and to provide the basis for understand the need for some degree of standardization in innovation project management.
